Volunteers uncover hidden set of stairs at Worsbrough Mill
A long-lost, hidden set of stairs have been uncovered by volunteers at Worsbrough Mill Country Park.
While hedge laying, the dedicated group of volunteers who regularly meet, uncovered quite a surprise. Beneath the soil and shrubbery lay a stone set of stairs, believed to be once used by local miners, who would have travelled up and down the stairs to the old pit at the back of the reservoir.
The stairs had become buried over the years, however, after much hacking and digging they have been revealed to be in perfect condition, available for the public to use.
Cllr. Robert Frost, Cabinet Support Member for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said: “What a brilliant discovery at Worsbrough Mill and Country Park. Thanks to the hard work of our wonderful volunteers, this fascinating piece of history has been uncovered and improves access at the same time. Barnsley Museums attractions are packed with hidden treasures with surprises around every corner!”
“Its an exciting time for Worsbrough Mill who have recently achieved SSSi and Green Flag status with more improvements to the site planned later in the year.”
